Lac La Hache to McLeese Lake
Lac La Hache to McLeese LAke
Breakfast with Theresa and Johnny, then on the road. Johnny was heading out to his fishing derby before we left. Nice riding today-no big hills between Lac LA Hache and Williams Lake. We were kind of surprised to see what look like gophers all along the roadside. I wasted about half an hour truing to get a decent photo of them, but they weren't interested in cooperating with me.
We did enjoy the nice long downhill into Williams Lake. Stopped for some photos at the Welcome sign, home of Rick Hansen, the Man In Motion. An admirable guy, and must be very tough to do the trip he did -around the world in a wheelchair. Kind of puts what we are doing into perspective-our trip might seem hard to many people (its really not), but in the big picture you can see how small and easy it really is. Then on for lunch at Tim Hortons-a girl there asked if I was from Fort St. John. I was puzzled, as she is too young to be someone I knew from there, but she recognized my jersey (Ferris Cycles) as being from FSJ. Turns out her Dad is friends with Pat Ferris. Then stopped at the Tourist info-I just had to ask about the hill out of town going north-the town sits in a big bowl. The girl very helpfully told me that there was no hill going out of town that way. Actually, there is a hill-it climbs for about 12kilometres. It was hot and muggy as we left, and as we rode we could see thunderclouds building, and here thunder rumbling. We stopped at a gas station, and were told that McLeese lake is about 10 minutes driving time. I guess he drives fast, as its actually about 25km. It started to rain just before we got there.
We met a couple from Florida, Peyton and Kay in the campground. They seemed blown away by our trip-they were travelling in a big 5th wheel trailer, heading up to Alaska. He gave us cold beer, which is always nice. Also met a couple who used to own the campground, but now just own a cabin there, and live in Williams Lake. They had a sweet little Shihtzu called Pinto that liked to play soccer-with a full size soccer ball. We walked over to the pub for dinner, then home and bed.
