Prince George to Bear Lake
Prince George to Bear Lake
Up early-today we are going to make some serious mileage. Breakfast and goodbyes at Brett and Janet's place after they put up with us for 2 days. I think we definitely replaced any calorie shortfall we might have had.
So, we make about 4km, mainly downhill. We are approaching an intersection-we have a green light. A car coming in from the right appears to be just rolling into the intersection in front of me. As I watch what she is doing, I hit one of those wonderful little windrows of gravel, dirt, and road debris that collects at intersections and curbs. All of a sudden, I'm sliding along the pavement. Tires have no grip when they get into loose crap on top of the pavement. The bike is fine-a little scuff to the left side panniers, and the shifter is twisted around, but unharmed. I was scraped up from my calf to my hip. A couple of deep holes around me knee from bigger pieces of gravel, etc... There was a rock about 1/2 inch square stuck in my knee, that took some effort to pop out. The lady driving the car did wait to see if I was OK-not exactly checking on me, more like sitting in her car puffing a cigarette and pissed off. I guess that passes as concern to some people. We pulled into a cemetary just down the street, and spent about a half hour cleaning it up as best possible. We stopped by a Walkin clinic, to see if they could do anything, but it apparently didn't open till 430pm. No help there. I didn't feel like riding to the hospital (out of our way) to get it cleaned up, so we hit Shoppers Drug Mart to stock up-gauze tape, stretch gauze, Telfa (nonstick) pads, and Ozonol. Took a few tries to come up with a setup that stayed on my knee while pedalling.
The climb out of Prince was actually pretty easy-I always remember it as beinga big hill. The riding was actuallt petty easy all day. I was just pissed off that the little accident had screwed up our plans to roll off big mileage. We had wasted too much time getting cleaned up, and it took a while on the road before my mood started to improve. Not so much mad at the driver who looked like she wasn't stopping, or the road crews that don't clean the crap off the road, or even myself (OK mainly at myself), as just the circumstances. It would actually have been better if it happened on the way into Prince George, where we were spending a couple of days anyway.
We stopped for lunch at Bear Lake at about 230pm. Had lunch at the little restaurant, and then asked about rooms at the motel. $58.50 for two people. Sounds good. Oh sorry, they're all full. But you can stay in the "Bunkhouse", a bunch of campshacks they rent to treeplanters working there, for $25.00. A tiny room with two single beds, a 30 year old TV set (with about 6 channels), and a bathroom and showers (free) down the hall. We joked that it was like "indoor camping". I was able to give my knee and leg a good scrubbing in the showers to get any remaining dirt and grit out. I don't hink Marilyn trusted the bed, she slept in her sleeping bag on top of the bed-I just crawled into my bed.
In spite of everything, we still made 85km.
